Through The Lens is an assignment that provides students with an opportunity to use their sociological lens and investigate social phenomena that appear in different sizes and scope throughout society. Students may choose to understand the social phenomena they select from a micro-lens of everyday interactions that are had between members of society or use the most macroscopic lens to understand social phenomena as a product of social structures (as forces) that impose on human behavior.

The “Through a Lens” assignment may require students to write a song and listen to a popular song, or snap a series of photographs, and apply their sociological lens to analyze the overarching meaning of the image they are looking at and/or the popular song lyrics they are reading (or listening to). An essential feature of this assignment is that it provides students an opportunity to conduct in-depth analysis and apply theory to experiences that are part of their life.
